Anti-Virus for Android

I was skimming the news again and I came across this article...

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/SMobile-Systems-Releases-First-Antivirus/story.aspx?guid={0218D8FF-D5F6-445F-B459-023B210CE3EC}

It basically says... "To help protect these users from the attack and proliferation of mobile viruses, spyware and other malware, SMobile Systems has released its SMobile VirusGuard for phones with Android."

But do we really need it? I go to several web pages but none of them have effected my Android... I don't have pop ups and I have yet to see any weird effects on my Android... I believe Google said before that it's set up system is set up so that A malicious app cannot effect other parts of the phone... so if I only can get Viruses via email or browser or get spyware through the browser... It should not effect the rest of the phone, right?

I could go in and uninstall the browser or email from the app management then redownload via the App market right?

I don't like how "Anti-" type companies play toward peoples fears... sure they are trying to make a buck too like everyone else... but I still think many of them are creating the problem itself... The Iphone has been out for several years and I have yet to hear about a Virus or spyware issues on that platform... and I sell computers so i get Linux customers in and I have yet to hear anyone saying "Damn, virus effected by Linux now I gotta buy a new one... " What do you guys think? Does Android users need to have a Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, Firewall, and other crap like that? Do you think Google will continue to fix bugs in their OS like that in the future for free?

Yeah, they definitely need something with all the internet access now, all of are phones are at risk of being hacked. Anti-Virus will be a must have with all phones sooner or later.

i think this is something that needs to be looked at later but not too far into the future. I can just picture a virus/trojan that infects your phone and sends all your contact info and mobile numbers to a server somewhere. From there the owner of the trojan can spam your contacts via text messages and spam thier email addresses.

I've been using Linux since 1999 and I can assure you this software is pointless. The only reason for running antivirus on Linux is if your sharing with Windows.

I thought linux could run executables, not as in .exe's but there own format, like mac os x runs there executables as the .app (and the iphone) android runs apk's arent they all executables meaning the all execute?

Just for the heck of it, i was looking at the program...

Seems to do *What* it says... Though it is rather pointless for the android phone. The definitions consist of the following;

So if you notice the names, they are all Symbian viruses... So it *could* find a virus on your android phone, but that virus itself isn't going to be doing anything...

Also an android virus *is* possible, though you'd have to install it yourself knowingly, or it could be attached to another source. This is why "unknown sources" is disabled by default.

You must not admin very much if users cannot use your system at all.

Protip: the items residing in /sbin, /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin are executables.

In fact, one could argue that everything with the execute bit set are, by definition, executables.

It would be a good piece of mind. Think of it like insurance. As long as we dont go and install any of those apps from other sites we should be fine. I never had a problem with my Dash and I DL a lot of ring tones.

I was browsing through the market on the moto droid and slept it. Turned it back on and it was moving on its own. Some type of virus got on my phone and they were able to control it. I had Lookout security app and antivirus app, but didn't work. Had to take out the battery it it seemed ok. Anyone know of a working antivirus?
