I've heard it's a good idea to wear them for 90 days actually. You don't want to have a blood clot as a complication of your surgery.

Blood in your calves can only be moved effectively by you using your calf muscles - that's why people get blood clots in their deep veins in their calves if they aren't moving around. Until you get up and moving quite a bit, it's good to wear these stocking most if not all the time. This is also another reason it's so important to walk, walk, walk after spine surgery.

It would be good for you to check with your surgeon's office to get their recommendation though.

thankyou , ive rang my surgeon and i have to wear them for another 6 weeks ! but like you say better the stockings than a nasty ole blood clot!

I had a posteriolateral L3-s1 fusion in February. My doctor said as long as I continued to get up and walk around the floor every few hours. I could take them off (and get rid of them) at day 3 post-surgery (I was in the hospital for 7 days). I'm 43 and have no other medical problems that would lead me to need to continue to wear them beyond day 3 after surgery. It all depenRAB on your age, medical history, and activity level.
