HERE'S THE RIDDLE:
Three students, Larry, Moe, and Curly, went to a party in January. They shook hands with each other when they met. Since there were three people, there were three handshakes: Larry shook hands with Moe, Larry shook hands with Curly, Moe shook hands with Curly.
In February, the students went to a party with a fourth student, Shemp, and shook hands with each other. This time, there were six handshakes: Larry shook hands with Moe, Larry shook hands with Curly, Larry shook hands with Shemp, Moke shook hands with Curly, Moe shook hands with Shemp, and Curly shook hands with Shemp.
In March, there was another party with FIVE students in attendance. In April, SIX students attended the party. In May, there were SEVEN students. This pattern continued throughout the year.
HOW MANY HANDSHAKES WERE THERE AT THE FINAL PARTY IN DECEMBER?
I will post an optional extension in "Additional Details."
Whoever gets the CORRECT answer and EXPLAINS in DETAIL on HOW THEY SOLVED IT, they will most likely get "Best Answer." Also, if they answer the optional extension, they will even have a BETTER chance of getting "Best Answer."
GOOD LUCK!
OPTIONAL EXTENSION: If the parties continued to be held every month and the same pattern of people attending also continued, how many handshakes would there be after 100 years?
