Anssi Vanjoki resigns from Nokia

it's likely he wanted the top job. look at the timing. either that or he didn't like who they hired. they need new blood in the company anyway. their products have been too little and too late. there are going to be casualties. he apparently is one of them.
 
How is it not good news? Nokia hasn't been doing things right lately, shaking things up is the best thing that could happen to them.
 
You're right. This is great news. The people who were calling the shots over the past 4 years need to be replaced with fresh blood who can demonstrate a new way of thinking and doing business. They don't have to pilfer execs from MS, Apple, Google, etc. but they do have to put a team in place that can do something about Nokia's change-resistant ways. Everyone acts like the company will crumble without Anssi but this is the same guy that is responsible for the N97. This is not the end of the world, it's not like Anssi is taking all of Nokia's patents and intellectual property with him and it's not like Carl Zeiss hopped up out of his grave and said that Nokia can't use his lenses anymore. Business will carry on and hopefully it's NOT business as usual

thank you for posting this (btw I'm glad you still post here LOL)

the post he made on Nokia conversations was full of fighting words but both the N95 and the N97 had pretty serious flaws and as far as I know he was responsible for both of those. it will be funny listening to the reactions of everyone who billed anssi as the "savior of the company."

I think Nokia needs to be shaken up and get some fresh blood to change, but with both symbian^4 and meeting on the verge of release there will be serious consequences if their next year doesn't go well. change is great but I just hope the new ceo and head of mobile devices don't go overboard with it and cause future phones and projects to lose their identity.
 
Shhhhh...You're gonna blow my cover ;)

People always hailed him as the father of the Nseries but they seem to overlook the fact that while he was at the helm, they went ahead and put out a lot of awful Nseries devices (N81, N81 8GB, N85, N96. To name a few) Yes, the N95 was buggy and underpowered when first released but they corrected that quickly with the N95-2, 3 and 4 and the N97 honestly isn't that bad of a device (there have been much, much worse devices from other manufacturers and even Nokia) but the fact of the matter was that we waited 7 months for it and it had some problems that it seems inconceivable that they'd release it with. To this day, I don't know which would have been worse, releasing the N97 exactly the same way it was released in June 2009 or delaying it to October 2009 when the v20 firmware was available. One of those things that makes you think.

FYI, I've been using an N97 Mini since Friday over my N900. I'm aware that this makes me crazy in some of your eyes but I actually missed Symbian after using the N900 exclusively as my primary device for 11 months
 
OK, this may be a dumb question. And I know people have made comments about it in the past. But, why wouldnt Nokia put out an Android phone? It is no secret that Nokia has excellent hardware capabilities. If they were to combine that with the buzz that is Android, how could that fail? just my 2 cents.
 
Hunh. So much for 'the fightback starts now' and his 'obsession'. It makes those words seem sort of silly now.

How funny would it be if he goes to work for Google or Apple out of spite?
 
Yep. Ego.

Releasing an Android doesn't mean they'd have to give up on Meego or Symbian; it would just be a short term thing to get some mind share and press, just the way Samsung is using Android for now while Bada gets ready.

But nooooooo.......

Anyway, their REAL missed opportunity was not buying Palm. They could have had their own, closed source, proprietary, superior OS in WebOS that is ready to ship NOW, but they let it fall into H-P's hands. In fact buying Palm would have *also* given them instant entry into the N.A. market, along with relationships in Silicon Valley. But again, that ego thing.
 
because if you do that, the only money you make is when you sell the device. after the device is sold, apps bought, services, etc. are all going into google's pockets, not the nokia/ovi pocket
 
I don't have anything against Anssi, as the N95 was such a nice phone, but I just think it'll be good to get some new faces. If he did resign simply because he did not get the CEO position, it's for the better as I'm sure he would be clashing with the new CEO at times. It looks like the stock went up a tad too.

WebOS would have been nice but I wouldn't particularly care for android on a nokia phone. It's looking more like meego will be ready to stand up to the other platforms but they need to put out a number of models to be able to get them into the hands of consumers and get the ball rolling as far as platform adoption. I'm hoping that the reason they aren't announcing the N9 at Nokia World is so they can have a speedy announcement to ship date, but their track record isn't encouraging.
 
There will be Nokia employees who will miss Anssi Vanjoki because he was memorable. He had personality. He could communicate.

You can't be invisible and be a leader. Maybe too many senior Nokia execs are only managers instead of leaders.
