Well it could go away, how long have you had it? As for your insurance, why don't you purchase Student Health Insurance from your school? I'm under Mega Life Insurance and basically it's free everything at the Student Health center and I pay up to $5 for prescriptions ($500 cap) and 20% at a Network Provider Hospital (40% outside). A year my cost is under $800 and I dont' have to meet the $200 deductible if I go use the Student Health Center. I have a referrel right now to see an Endo and I may have to do that if I decide to go back on Spiro.

You really cant' get a better deal than Student Health Insurance from your school. Although my friend, her school provides the same insurance company, but if she were to get insurance, it would cost her nearly $1200! The difference? She would basically be prepaying for services she may never use. She gets free checkups, etc at her provider hospital, but she has to pay a $10 Copay at the student health center. So I'm not sure which plan your school will choose, but I really like mine. I actually have an appt. with my school Nutritionist to check to see if I'm getting all my nutrients since I changed my diet and it won't cost me anything (I think).

If money is an issue...don't your parents have health insurance? As long as you are in school you are covered by your parents (if they have the family plan) until you are 23. Otherwise, do you work? To save money breaking the cost into 1 or 2 payments is a good idea, but they do allow you to purchase insurance PER semester! Those Tests are going to cost you big money, more money than the insurance would. So even if you could only afford to purchase insurance for 1 semester, it's worth it. Go see the Endo, get the tests and see what happens.

Say, do you have any other signs of a hormonal balance? Weight problems, menstrual problems, hirsutism?

Wish you the best

Have you tried Pantothenic Acid (B5)? I was getting acne outbreaks while on Propecia and it cleared it up right away. Maybe you could try finding a different dermatologist, there are a lot out there. It could be that she isn't prescribing it to you for your own health, did she do any studies?
If you are SURE it will be safe for you to take it then just order it online. If you do a search you can find it relatively cheap.

Don't give up. I have been on Spiro for several years and I fully believe that had I taken it when I was your age I would not have severe scarring. I had to go to 2 doctors, my primary Care provider and a dermatologist to get the medication. My PCP sent me for a pelvic sonogram to rule out polycystic ovarian disease (which I did not have) before sending me to the derm. I am now being followed by an endocrinologist and don't go to the derm anymore. I have had no side effects from spiro (other than dry hair) and am only taking 25 mg per day.

If you don't think you can find an endo call the derms in your area and ask if they prescribe spiro for acne. If you find a derm that does, make an appointment even if you have to take out a loan. Or if you have a major medical center anywhere near you you might be a ble to find a derm or endo there that will listen.

I'm sorry I didn't win the $230 Mega Million Lottery yesterday otherwise I would send you the money myself.

So I went to my doctor today to ask about Spiro. I was prepared for rejection but didn't think she wasn't even gonna listen to what I had to say. I showed her the acne all over my back, around my mouth, shoulders, and even top of my legs. I told her about how oily my face gets. I showed her the excess hair and told her I think this is a hormonal problem. Before I could even finish what I had to say she said, "There is nothing wrong with you... this is normal" I even came prepared with print out articles on how Spiro has been helping acne sufferers and she hardly even looked at them. She just kept saying "There is nothing wrong with you" Anyways, She prescribed Yasmin and some more BP (I hate trying to put creams on my back... this is part of the reason I went there) Has anyone had good results with just Yasmin? What has it helped?

Thats messed up! My derm actually recommended Spiro and it works great! Been using it for almost a year! And I have really cut my usage cause I dont need it as much anymore. I wonder why derm dont prescribe it??

I'm pretty sure that this is a hormonal problem or i'm extra sensitive to testosterone or something. Who gets acne on their LEGS? I really think I do have mild hirsutism. It's not too bad but it seems to be getting worse and if it is hirsutism then it will get worse. I figure if I do SOMETHING about it now, then I might not have to suffer later. The doctor says that it is normal... it may be for her because she is of a different heritage. I'm pretty certain this is not normal for me.

welcome to the spiro reject club....my gyno prescribed my yasmin but doesn't like perscribing spiro for some unknown reason...i have a long overdue appt. with an endo in early march and i'm hoping that he'll see my light...
sweet jade: what kind of tests should he perform?
i've decided to hold off taking the yasmin until after the appt. I don't want to mess up my hormones with chemicals before the appt. so he can see what my levels really are.

my derm will prescibe it for guys in low amounts....25mgs and prescribes it for girls too.my md will prescribe spiro to me.im a guy and had no problem getting it.i see no reason why a md wont give a girl spiro that has excessive hair and acne.as long as you pass your blood test.i would make sure they are at least putting you on 50 to 100 mgs of it.it just control acne and hair its not a cure but as long as you take it every day your face should clear up.i dont mind a girl with hairy arms but i dont like hairy legs.its up to the girl if she want hair on her body or not.it wouldnt make any differance to me if she had excess hair or not but acne sucks on a guy or girl.

Aye, I hate hearing stuff like that =/ I've never taken Yasmin but it's actually a Birth Control (estrodial) with a Synthetic Progesterone (progestin). So if your problems are caused by a progesterone deficiency, this should help.

Now as for this doctor, you need to go to an Endocrinologist. Don't waste anymore time with these other doctors or derms. Go to someone that understanRAB and knows when "symptoms" are looking them back in the face. Having body acne is not normal! Any women with more body hair, particularly in areas where a man would have it is also NOT normal. So go see yourself a specialist and be done with these highly insensitive and ignorant doctors.

Best of luck!

P.S. what really Ts me off is that she just put you on Yasmin? She didn't take a Baseline Blood test first? That test would show your hormone levels and would SHOW that there is too much testosterone floating around or some other hormonal irabalance. Wow.

There is Spiro in Yasmin...for me, not enough to help for more than 6 months, but it did clear me up for a while. I think that I must be immune to it or something because I have had more cysts ON Yasmin than without. I am going back to Demulen, personally.

I have read a lot about spiro and have a lot of sypmtoms that everyone else has...acne, excess body hair... and so on. I just started on yasmin a week ago so I don't really know what to think of it yet, but about the spiro... does it do anything for the excess body hair? Does taking 50 to 100mg a day make the hair go away?

I'd like to go to an Endocrinologist but I just don't know where to find one around here and I really have no money. I'm 19 and have no insurance. I'm even cutting it close with the Yasmin costing 30.00 a month along with other things I have to pay. The BP she prescribed was 90.00! Isn't that crazy?? So I couldn't get that. Parents won't really help me out because they think the acne will just go away. As much as i've told them, they don't know how much it bothers me.
