A short compound column, composed of steel
tube fitting loosely inside a copper tube is
carrying an axial load (F). Prove that the stress in steel and copper
tube is σs = (F × Es) / (As × Es + Ac × Ec) and
σc = (F × Ec) / (As × Es + Ac × Ec),
respectively. Assume Es, As and Ec, Ac as the
Young’s modulus and cross-sectional area(s)
of steel and copper tubes, respectively. Top
plate through which force is applied can be
assumed as rigid plate.
