The Chicago thread got me thinking about my childhood.
There used to be a market and/or delicatessen called "Smithfield's" in
downtown Evanston. This would be about 50 years ago and I was
wondering whatever happened to it. Google is not helping me, but
given the number of Olde Phartes
in this newsgroup, I thought I'd
ask.
The reason being: They made outstanding roast beef sandwiches. A
huge mound of thinly sliced rare roast beef on thick bakery white
bread, with yellow mustard, slices of good garlicky dill pickle, and
lettuce. It was a treat we sometimes got when mom and us kids visited
dad at work in downtown Evanston. Certainly not the only thing they
made, but it was what everyone in my family always had and to this
day, I call that combo a "Smithfield's sandwich" and make or have them
fairly often.
A shot in the dark. TIA.
