In this book, my teacher had talked about a certain quote, and i did not quite understand it. Please help.

(emily brent)- "In the midst of life we are in death.", I dont see how this quote reflects the novel (b/c i dont understand the quote), and he said emily brent had said this in a "clear voice." I dont understand at all....can anyone please explain?

It may have meant that one by one people were being murdered. Death was happening all around the ones still left living.

People were dieing and the people that were still alive were witnessing it. So there when she says "In the midst of life we are in death." What she means is that there right there when people are being killed one by one, and it's only a matter of time before the other die as well.
