An open relationship on facebook- is is a joke or not :S?

This guy i've had a massive crush on for ages has put on his facebook thats he's in an open-relationship with a girl he knows that doesnt go our college. I think he gets on quite well with this girl and i've seen comments about them being husband and wife, and they're allways messing around. I'm not sure whether they are actually going out now. At first i believed it, but now i know an open relationship is where you can have other people involved in it, i'm not too sure- so could be a joke because i've seen friends put they are in open relationships- especially if they are girls or very close friends, but i dont know her personally so i don't know if they are really close friends but it seems they get on well. But i thought it could mean they are just starting to date but i don't know...
We're all 17, so in reality it would be a joke, especially on facebook, but does it mean they are just starting out a new relationship :S Why wouldnt they just put in a relationship?
I don't want to get my hopes up, but i don't want to back off him if it's just a joke.
 
open relationship usually means they have made an agreement that they can both date other people at the same time.

personally I dont like sharing men but maybe I'm old fashioned!
 
as much as facebook rules peoples lives it doesnt always tell the truth. people sometimes just put themselves into a relationship because they dont like it saying 'single'. but they could have put relationship as you said so i dont think that you need care about it.. go for it and see wat happens, dont be left wondering what if.. live in the moment :)
