I realize that this is a somewhat unusual question - I'm a novelist, and am planning to do more research but need a general sphere to research inside. The character in question needs to have an illness or condition which would cause a life expectancy of about 30-40 even with excellent treatment, and, if at all possible, persistent difficulty in breathing.
