An Essay or A Book Review?

well my history teacher told me that we had a project,it is about reading a book but idk whats better if to do an essay on a book or do a book review on a book?plus what do you do in an essay on a book? is it different than a book review?my proffessor told me tht they were both the same thing.and if it is why did he give me 2 options to choose from if they are the same thing.please help
