So I took my Mesa Boogie 3-ch Dual Recitifier head in to a repair shop, for blowing fuses, even after I'd replaced the power tubes. The amp repair guy's deal was $75/hr., with the first hour including the first $75 worth of parts, if necessary, so I wrote my number on the ticket, with a note saying to please call me if it's going to go over that first $75 hour.
They called a couple weeks later, and said it was all done, and that apparently I had just needed new tubes, so they put a brand new set of matched Ruby preamp tubes, and matched power tubes into the amp, "lubed and cleaned" it...,, and it was ready for pickup, and the grand total would be $272. ...
The problem is, I didn't ask for, nor did I want, a whole brand new set of preamp and power tubes. I wanted to find out why the amp was blowing fuses, and get a call telling me what we were looking at.
I think once you diagnose the problem, and figure out that you just need new tubes, especially when you know you're now looking at a large dollar amount, you call the client, and say, "Hey, you just need new tubes; We can do it for you, it's going to run x amount, or if you already have tubes," etc. But these are your options. You don't just throw in brand new everything, and then call and say "Hey yeah it's all done, and that'll be 300 dollars."
All I'm saying is, when you take your car in to the shop, they diagnose it, and when they find that you need a new starter, they call you and say, "Hey, you need a new starter, here's what we're looking at for parts and labor, do you want us to go ahead with it?" They don't just throw in a new starter, wash your car, reupholster the seats, and then call and say "Yeah it's all done and that'll be 1,000 dollars."
Am I off sides here? I don't think I'm being unreasonable. I haven't called them back yet, any suggestions?
