American Idol contestant for whom everyone voted as a joke?

Okay, so I was watching TV the other day -- I think it may have been How I Met Your Mother or Gilmore Girls or Psych -- and someone said something like, "Is this going to be like American Idol when everyone voted for ___________ as a joke?"

Who is the blank? At first I thought he might have said Sanjaya, but I'm not sure. Also, why? Why did everyone vote for him/her as a joke? If you don't know that's okay, I'll google it, I was just wondering.

Yes, Sanjaya. His singing sucked, but he got voted in the show until near the end by people and groups who were trying to kill the show or wanted to annoy. There is something in the rules for Idol that lets them ignore the public voting.
