I think it was more realistic although I liked the theatrical ending. The whole movie had some really good messages and lessons in it, much more than the average film and I think it should have had two endings. However I think the theatrical ending is better in showing that there are more ways to life than violence and hate. The alternate ending, though probably more realistic, is a little depressing in that it makes it seem that extremism is the way to go.
Frankly it depends on the person... some people would have been overwhelmed with hate and gone back to the "dark side" but some would have not. I can understand why he would go back to Nazism. He learns to overcome hate and prejudice and when he gets a normal life back a stereotypical gang-banger black kills his brother.
