Topping tech headlines on Wednesday was the launch of Amazon's new Kindle tablets.
Amazon announced three new Kindle Fire tablets, the $139 Kindle Fire HD, $229 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX, and $379 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX. The two higher-end models feature super-high-res screens and "Mayday," a tech support system where a live Amazon employee appears in a video window on your tablet. In other news, Twitter launched a new Alerts service, which will provide users with notifications about emergency situations from trusted sources. Twitter partnered with dozens of organizations, including the American Red Cross, FEMA, the World Health Organization, and various state and local groups for the new service.
Meanwhile, after much anticipation about a rumored Steam Box from Valve, the company on Wednesday instead announced plans for a variety of Steam Machines from third-party manufacturers that will run the new SteamOS. Before those Steam Machines hit the market, though, Valve will produce its own prototype device to test out SteamOS.
