Amarena Cherries in Syrup

I have a recipe that calls for these. It's Lidia Bastianich's baked apples.
They have three syrups on them. Chocolate, reduced apple, and the cherries.

I want to make these tomorrow but I am not sure I can find the cherries that
quickly. There are no Italian markets around here. There is Central Market
which might have them. But if they don't? What (if anything) can I use as
a substitute?

I know I can get the cherries online and I may just do that. But they won't
get here by tomorrow. Daughter saw Lidia making these a few hours ago and I
promised to make them for dessert. I know I can also just leave the
cherries off, but I would like to have them if I can get them.

Thanks!

Amarena is just Italian for sour cherries -- pie cherries. Try a
Polish or German or Middle Eastern store, or the gourmet aisle of your
local grocery. I'd use preserves if I couldn't find cherries in syrup.
Pie cherries also are grown in Michigan's Traverse Bay region.

I see this recipe is from the Alto Adige, known before WW I as the
Sudtirol. (Sudtirol was given to Italy after the war so Italy could
control its link to Central Europe. Surprisingly, the Austrian-born
Hitler and Mussolini agreed to leave it as part of Italy.) So I doubt
any peculiarly Italian sour cherry would be required.

We don't have those types of stores around here either. There is an Indian
store but I've never been in there to see what they have. Thanks!

Right. There is one in Lynnwood but that is too far for me to have gotten
to today. We had a ton of stuff to do after school. I wound up using the
preserves which daughter didn't like. And I now realize that I forgot the
butter. Lidia put a tiny piece of butter in each apple. I guess it's okay.
I never put butter in my apples when I bake them. Daughter said they were
really good except for the cherries. I will order some online and perhaps
something else as well depending on where I get them. I was reading about
them online and they are supposed to be really good.

The apples smell divine! I can't wait to eat mine!

I liked mine fine including the cherries. However it was too many carbs for
me. Should have left the sauces off. We have one more apple. I bought an
extra in case we screwed one up. For some reason the apples I bought seemed
to have overly spread out cores. I had to use the core about 4 or 5 times
in each one pushing it out to the sides.
