 If you can, please advise. I am 6 weeks post ALIF with auto-bone marrow and anchoring to sacrum and iliac. I have been running low grade fever intermittently since the surgery. My Infect. Disease specialist rand tests. Preliminary results only show high sed rate (= inflammation). Cultures not back yet so no antibiotic regimen. Tonight, fever restarted around 100* F, with major body aches and hip pain. Now notice something new - a hard lump transversing at 45 degrees my "bikini" incision from where they cut me for the ALIF. The lump is about 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" long. It is hard; not tender to touch but shooting pains coming randomly from it down to my groin. There is no apparent opening and no oozing from the wound. Does this sound like an emergency? The ER wont give me any idea as to whether this is or is not an "ER" type of emergency. They tell me to call my surgeon (ha - explain that won't help- they find this incredulous) Sigh, I do try to call my surgeon, and like always, there is no one on call and only a recording saying "if it is an emergency go the the nearest ER or call 911". Not very helpful  Can this wait until morning or until Monday when the stupid surgeon's office opens?

I am not a medical person, and no one else has answered, so my opinion is with a fever of 100 I would probably go to the ER. I can't believe there is no doctor on call. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer.

Thank you for the opinion. It is CRAZY that there is no one on call, don't you think? I would try calling the vascular surgeon who opened me and closed me for my ortho. surgeon (had two surgeons) but I don't even know his name :( I am seriously considering going to ER right now. Am just afraid that I'm acting too early. My judgment seems imparied right now. Thanks again.
