Am I wasting my time taking this to court? It's just a small thing, but...?

Here's what happened.

The plates/tags on my veh expired in March 2009, and I just could not afford to pay the taxes on the vehicle and couldn't get them renewed, so I was driving with expired plates until November 2009. (taxes on the veh were like $500). I recently had a job change, and the wife had her hours cut back. I know that's just an excuse and everyone is dealing with it, but I'm just explaining why we hadn't paid. So Oct 11th, I got a ticket for expired tags (I DO and always have carried insurance on the veh, so it was just tags), which was like $100. I told the officer at the time, it was simply due to financial hardship, and I was working on getting the taxes paid. About 18 days later, I got pulled over AGAIN. I told the officer, please, I got paid today, I am paying the taxes and getting this renewed on the next business day. Please do not give me ANOTHER ticket, this only compiles my money problem. He gave me one anyways, less than 3 weeks from the last one. Well, the next business day I went and got everything renewed. Someone told me to take the second ticket and see if a judge would throw it out for me.

Obviously, I wouldn't get a lawyer involved since it's such a minor issue, but what would you suggest? Should I try? Has anyone else ever succeeded in this?

Thanks for the advice
