No, you're not the only one. I see a lot of my friend's profile statuses and and they say things like"why is my facebook chat so screwed up?!" etc... And I also know from personal experience, too. For example, last night was one of the most annoying facebook chat experiences. My facebook chat said that none of my friends were online and it wouldn't let me load my friends list. People could talk to me, but I couldn't talk to them. That was just one incident, though. There have been MANY others.
I think the problem is just that facebook is getting really populated and has millions, if not billions, of users. Sometimes it works a little slowly, but it always ends up working in the long run. Patience is the key in this situation.
Also, try signing off and waiting a little while then sign back in. It sometiems works for me!
