...hop than classic poetry? Well, most of the poems they made us read in school so far have not had many of these elements. I'm talking about:
Wordplay
Metaphors
Storytelling (that is actually pretty important in poetics)
Similies
And don't forget the all-powerful rhyming sequences that make the piece interesting
Multi-syllable rhymes
Internal rhymes
Slant rhymes
And also the irregular rhyme schemes, where it is rhymed throughout and not on the upbeat rather than just one rhyme at the end of a line.
People don't seem to value these much, based on the reading of poetics we do in school. However, they get these into our head, but can't give any classic examples of poetry which utilize these concepts. it actually kind of ticks me off.
You look at one Eminem verse, it has the best multisyllable rhyming out of all these so-called masterpieces. You look at one Big L verse, it has the best wordplay of all these so-called masterpieces. And then they teach us about these "oh so complex" rhyming schemes like AABB. AT THE END OF EACH LINE! Are you kidding me?
I feel hip hop should be integrated more when talking about these devices rather than poems by respected and overrated poets.

So I just wanted to know your opinion on this. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
