Am I breaching covenants in having more than one dog?

For the past 13 years we have owned two dogs and have never experienced any problems at all. However, on looking at an old Conveyance of the property from when it was originally built in 1969, it states that the original developer will only permit one dog, one cat or caged birds on the property. There is plenty of space in the back garden and we always keep it clean and free of 'doggy smells' by hosing down the flagstones more or less each day. In addition, the dogs never really bark so fortunately, we have never received any complaints from the neighbours and we have all lived a hassle-free existence for years.

I am now worried after reading this deed that if someone else becomes aware of the covenant (I assume each house in our row will have the same covenants) whether anyone could insist that we get rid of one of the dogs (which would be heartbreaking for all the family!)

Basically, I am just curious as to how much standing such an old covenant would have over the situation that we have been living in for years. Can it become out of date after long use etc? I would also say that a couple of neighbours own more than one cat so I am not the only one 'breaching' the covenant.
