I just bought a 1998 Honda Accord car about 4 days ago with 112,455 miles, It has a digital odometer.
But I think I realized something to late.... In the car tittle I can see that the owner that sold me the car, when he bought it, it supposedly had 88,000 miles from the previous owner, and I barely realized that the car tittle has something strange before the 88,000, it looks like a erased digit, it just looks like a number 1 that was erased by folding the paper and scratching it. After I saw that, I realized that it could be reading 188,000. And that the mileage was rolled down, Now thinking more about it, I'm beggining to think that the car has 212,445 miles, instead of 112,445 miles.
What actions should I take??? Can I report all the previous owner(s) to the law??, to find out who the author of the odometer rollback is.
Although I'm unsure about this, I would to know if there are any other methods to know the real car mileage, I think that the erased digit is just enough evidence to show the car had its mileage changed. I'm thinking of getting a car report at Carfax, Im unsure in getting the car report by carfax, but if its necessary to uncover these criminals I would do it.
Please let me get some opinions, should I report or there is no such thing as erasing digits from car titles.
Additionally I took the car today to get the smog check and it was rejected, they told me it was not something seriously, that it just needed to be run 5 miles, after that the check engine light turned on, which didn't turned the previous days, I took it to auto zone and they checked it and told me, that I need to replace a valve. A faulty EGR valve or a Blocked EGR Passages in engine. I told the technician about the check engine that it appear just today after I went to the smoke check, and had never seen it on the previous days, he told me that , someone could have turned off that light with the same tool he used to find the faulty valve. He told when this happens it takes about a week or 2 for the car engine or computer to recognize the problem, and the check engine light turns again.
I think that replacing the valve will resolve all the smoke check and the check engine issues.
But thinking about the miles that have been rolled back, it just has me confused and scared because if it is true that the car has so many miles, by time I will keep having the trouble of repairing little things like this valve which its about $170 + installation.
