Alright, this is weird. Why does my friends Final Fantasy 8 game keep freezing up?

Alright, so a friend of mine, has Final Fantasy 8, but it won't work on his PS 1 or 2 and it won't work on my PS2. I only have maybe one or two really tiny scratches. He had let someone else borrow it (Before me) and now every time he or me goes to play it, it freezes up at the begining when they show the ocean part. And you can't skip the inro since it freezes up right away. Why does it do that? It can't be because of the very tiny scratches, can it? It worked fine when he let his other friend borrow it, but when he got it back it was like that.

Can someone please answer the question for me?

PS. I did get it to work the first time i played it on my PS2, but when i tried it again, it wouldn't let me, and so i did that for about five minutes, but gave up.
 
if it is the scratches, for some reason, toothpaste works. toothpaste, dry, buff it off. no clue how. but such small scratches doesnt normally a few with gameplay... reminds me of what happened to my kingdom hearts game. it's broken, yet no visible scratches...
