Im 17, and i got my bike about 9 months ago when i first got my license. I would suggest a Suzuki katana. They are not killer powerful but they are a hell of a thrill to ride as a first bike. They are also relatively cheep if you can find one used around your area. and because it is not a racing tuned bike insurance premiums will definitely be lower.

Will all do respect to Mark. I think a 250 would be a weak bike, and this is my reasoning. A 600cc bike general has a bit more power. If you where to get in a pinch in traffic say in between two cars your best chance of a quick escape is to accelerate. Now with a 250 that would be much more difficult because the amount of power is weak. Besides when you hear a 250 come by it sounds like a dirtbike with the Rpms over 10,000 doing 50... its just strange
