ALPHARETTA, Ga. —
An Alpharetta police officer is recovering at North Fulton Medical Center after a man opened fire on the officer during a traffic stop.
It happened just after 8:30 p.m. Friday along Main Street in Alpharetta.
Alpharetta police said the officer pulled over a black truck for a tag violation in the parking lot of a Christian book store.
Investigators said the driver opened fire on the officer when the officer approached the truck.
The officer was shot three times in the abdomen, shoulder and leg, but was able to call for help while the man fled.
Police sent out an alert to other police agencies in the area, and a Roswell police officer spotted the truck.
The driver then took off, eventually getting onto Ga. 400.
Officers said the man crashed the truck while traveling at a high rate of speed. He then got out of the truck and began firing at the police officers.
That's when police opened fire on the man, killing him.
Roswell police confirmed to Channel 2's Mike Petchenik that a woman driving by the incident was hit by the gunfire.
She was taken to North Fulton Medical Center, where her condition is unknown at this point.
Police have not identified the suspect in the officer's shooting, only to say he was a white male.
Police continue to investigate this incident. At last check, the officer was said to be alert and conscious and is expected to make a full recovery.
