Allergies and Asthma

Hi anybody help,

I have been suffering from allergies for 4 months, ragweed, dust, mouldy places, perfumes, glue etc. I have asthma in my family and my sister says I have allergy induced asthma which she has. My doctor disagrees. My peak flow tests are 500, but I am usually not suffering when I see him. When I have an attack my chest is very sore and tight, I have a cough with whitish phelgm and my throat is very sore and tight. I have used preventers but I was allergic to the first, the second worked lovely, but irritated my throat too much, so the doctor changed to another inhaler. I also take Ventolin. The last doctor I saw said he was unsure if I had asthma (bearing in mind the second preventer did work) and took me off the third preventer I used and said I might have acid reflux. Since I stopped taking the preventer I have been really miserable and suffer tight chest and sore throats and my allergies have returned. Does anybody think I have allergy induced asthma. My doctor is driving me mad. The specialist at the hospital did allergy tests with omitted to tell me to stop taking my anti-histamines so nothing showed up. He said I may have slight asthma but was not convinced. My mother had asthma and my sister has asthma. I have very little wheezing which the doctor says I should have, but the nurse at the surgery says not so, you can have asthma without wheezing. I do not know which way to turn. Can someone help me, I feel I need the preventer.
 
My wife had allergy induced asthma a few years ago. Every August I could count on taking her to the ER at least once.
The thing that cured her of this was to stop drinking any alcohol that time of year.
She was never a heavy drinker but that did the trick. She hasn't used an inhaler since.
 
If it is allergy induced, then the key is to get the allergies under control, not the asthma. What are oyu doing for them? Antihistamines? Allery injections?
 
I have been on anti-histamines but I am due to have more allergy tests tomorrow with a private doctor, so have stopped the anti-histamines. Since stopping the preventer last week and the anti-histamines on tuesday I have been getting attacks and having to use my ventolin. I have two attacks today, one when my son sprayed his deodorant and one this afternoon after a meal. Obviously, I will find out more tomorrow, but I was doing fine on the preventer until the doctor decided my really bad throat may be due to acid reflux and wanted to see if my problems stemmed from that. I feel it is the allergies that are causing my problems. I spoke to the doctor on the phone today and he said the preventer and the anti-histamines help with the allergies, so that is why I am having problems today. Once I have had my tests I will start taking the anti-histamines and the preventer again. Hopefully this will settle me down a bit. My sister and friend both have asthma and say that they think my symptoms are asthma, but the doctor is not convinced.
 
Asthma can (and many times) is triggered from allergies. I've had problems with asthma since I was a little girl... all these years just dealt with it and used my inhaler when it acted up. Finally after taking some soy-containing vitamins, I broke out into a terrible rash that spread all over my entire body. Went to an allergist and he did testing and come to find out I am VERY allergic to peanuts.. then next in line came SOY.. then corn and wheat, but those were on the low end.. I have no clue and never made a connection with the peanuts (or any of these fooRAB) and asthma but sure enough since I have been told to not touch a peanut my asthma has improved at least by 80%!! The rest is brought on by seasonal allergies (hay fever).. So yes, I think asthma can definitely be triggered from allergies.
Just keep watching and when you find things that are triggering the attacks just avoid them if possible.. taking the antihistamines will help in your case since there's always going to be people around with perfumes etc.
 
I have been to a private doctor and he found I am allergic to my dogs, dust mites, bananas and aerosols. He doesn't want me to give up my dogs until I have tried the many allergen products and to reschedule what and where I keep my dogs. It is going to be hard but my family do not want to give up our dogs. I will try, but I have my doubts. I have always had a funny reaction to bananas, and my mother was allergic to dust mites, so I will have to try and buy some anti-allergy products e.g. duvets, mattress covers, pillows and dust mite sprays, which my husband will have to do for me, and keep out of the way of fresh air sprays and perfumes etc. At last I have some answers though and I can go back to my local doctors and let them know that it is not just anxiety, which they have been trying to fob me off with, and also they say that I do not have asthma, but I have.
 
I think I have found out a major problem with my allergies. My mother-in-law recently died of cancer and I was looking after her, that is when my symptoms started. I was cleaning her house with disinfectant, and have recently bought the same disinfectant as I cannot use sprays. I used some the other day and had an attack, so you really have to be on the ball to notice what you are allergic to. I had been using this disinfectant on and off for 4 months, not realising it was that I was allergic to. I will have to get some chemical free cleaners for my home, does anyone know some products I can use, e.g. toilet cleaner, washing up liquid, washing powder.
