Allergic reaction to Betadine???

Wednesday I had surgery to remove my gallbladder. It was the first time I'd ever had surgery and everything went well. I've been feeling pretty good but noticed yesterday that my stomach was red, itchy and irritated. After showering this morning, the first time I could do so since surgery, I realized that I have a rash covering almost my entire stomach area. Actually even my legs are a little red as well. It seems to be everywhere that they put the betadine. Could I be having a reaction to the betadine or is something else going on? I plan on calling my doctor in the morning but just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you should definitely call your doctor. Sounds like an allergic reaction to something. It could be the betadine or it could be a latex reaction or a drug allergy (did they give you an antibiotic before or after surgery)? Whatever it is, you need to find out so you don't come in contact with it again. Good luck!

Just wanted to update/clarify. It was Chloraprep that was used to clean the surgical area, not betadine. Spoke with my doctor this morning and he said I must have had an allergic reaction to the Chloraprep. He also said he had another patient with the same problem a couple weeks ago. I'll definitely make sure that something else is used if I ever have to have surgery done or any other medical procedure. There was some improvement today as the rash doesn't seem to be as red and irritated. Nothing to do but take Benadryl for the itching. At least I know what is causing it now because I was freaking out earlier. Thanks for responding Soibhan.
