I have just seen the Godfather thread which made me think that the first GF film has surely one of cinema's iconic performances in Brando.

Others I would put foward are:

James Dean- Rebel without a cause

De Niro - Raging Bull

Nicholson- One flew over the cuckoos nest

The shark in Jaws !

I totally agree with you and I would have included Brando in "On The Waterfront" (I coulda been a contender!)

How about Daniel Day Lewis in "My Left Foot".....that was pretty iconic!

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump
John Hurt in Elephant Man
Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend
Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy
Gary Cooper in High Noon
John Wayne in True Grit
Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful
Robert Carlyle in Trainspotting

to name a few!

"12 Angry Men"... Great shout - such an under-rated film... never really gets mentioned... Great cast performance there too... Thanks for reminiding me - will dig it out and watch it tonight!

Michael MaRABen and/or Steve Buscemi in Reservoir Dogs
Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspect
Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead films

Al Pacino in Scarface.Very over the top at times, but totally awesome.

But I think Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront was as good as it gets. And he was also pretty amazing in A Streetcar Named Desire.

One of my all time favourites. It was one a 3 am about 8 months ago... I was clued to it still.

One of those films, which no matter how many times you see it - some comes up that you had forgotton about.

Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs

Peter Sellers in Being There

Henry Fonda in Twelve Angry Men

Spencer Tracy in Inherit the Wind

Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer

Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate

Richard Farnsworth in The Straight Story

That reminRAB me...

Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man"

Not the most popular or commercial film, but what about...

Ed Norton in "American History X" ... Say what you like about the film, but it's an intense and searingly good performance

Katherine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter

Anne Bancroft in The Miracle Worker

Sigourney Weaver in Aliens

Jessica Tandy in Driving Miss Daisy

Greer Garson in Mrs Minniver

Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard

Shirley MacLaine in Guarding Tess

Nah, Clint Eastwood in Fistful of dollars, Few dollars more and The Good, the Bad and the ugly. These performances were what catapulted his career.

Definetly agree with Al Pacino in Scarface and
Sylvester Stallone in Rocky though. Groundbreakers

I think Michael Caine in the Italian job should be included.
Sharon Stallone in Basic instinct, even!
