SAN FRANCISCO -- All three girls who died from injuries in the crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 were Chinese students from the same school who were traveling to attend summer camp in the United States, according to Chinese news outlets that identified the third victim Saturday as 15-year-old Liu Yipeng.
The girls all lived in East China's Zhejiang province, according to the English-language China Daily, which said they were traveling with a group of 35 students who planned to attend an academic summer camp in Los Angeles.
Mourners across China have been leaving condolences for the girls on social media sites.
Liu Yipeng died Friday at San Francisco General Hospital after suffering severe head injuries in the July 6 crash, said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault, who on Saturday told this newspaper that the exact cause of her death had not yet been determined.
The 15-year-old was still in her seat when rescuers found her in the wreckage of the downed plane, according to The Associated Press.
Authorities had previously identified the other two victims as Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, both 16. Officials said Ye Mengyuan was run over by a fire truck that was racing to the crash scene. The AP reported she may have been covered in flame-retardant foam that had been sprayed around the wreckage by emergency workers, although it's not clear if she was alive at that point.
Foucrault said it could be two or three weeks
before he releases his findings on how she died.Wang Linjia was among passengers who may have been thrown from the plane. The AP said Saturday that she apparently didn't receive medical help immediately because rescuers didn't spot her body until 14 minutes after the crash.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but they have cleared the wreckage of the crashed Boeing 777 from Runway 28L at San Francisco International Airport. Officials said the runway was re-opened for commerical airliners to take off and land late Friday afternoon.
Liu Yipeng's parents had traveled to San Francisco after the crash, arriving earlier this week before she died, according to China Daily.
Six other passengers were still being treated Saturday at San Francisco General Hospital, including one child. A spokeswoman said two were in critical condition. One other passenger remains in serious condition at Stanford Hospital.
