I bought this 86 Regal for 800. I would like to put a new engine and transmission. What i need to know is where i could find what kind of engines will fit in the car.
Ya, as the parts guy said, either replace it with the current engine size or the optional one for that year. I don't recall ever hearing the Olds 307 was an option. But the Chevy 305 was. If you want to do it right, go ahead & do the 305 instead of the 3.8 V6. I would find a GM crate motor w/ warranty as well as the trans.
The answer is anything you want, kind of....the factory options were a Buick built 3.8 6 cylinder, a Chevy built 305 v8 or an Olds built 307 v8. You can install anything you want but major modifications are required to do that. Try a salvage yard for a used engine but most of those will be high mileage, most of these factory engines will need to be 81 or older to fit.
