All emails appear bold in my inbox, even after I open and close the emails. Why?

Every email in my inbox appears bold as if the emails have not been read. Can this be fixed? This has never been a problem before. When I open the emails, read and close out again, the emails still appear bold. Help!! It is hard to decipher what has been read or needs reading.
