Air pollution causing coughing

Last sunday when I was swimming in the pool, suddenly I started coughing. I thought it was nothing special. I was heading to get out of pool and I heard the whistle and life guard instructed everybody to vacate the pool. Then I came to know that there was air pollution.

What kind of air pollution is this ?
How does air pollution cause coughing ?
Can this air pollution any other problem ?
