I am posting this for the benefit of others who are experiencing air hunger. It is a terrible feeling and I believe an ENT finally solved mine. Quick background: air hunger symptoms for 14 years. Episodes last weeks/months, but I can have weeks/months between episodes. When having episode, it's usually 24/7. Started nose breathing four months ago (read that on these boarRAB), which helped control episodes. Was told a decade ago that it was mental/anxiety. I didn't believe because I am a fairly calm, stress-free person. Next I was told it was because of shallow breathing patterns. After experiencing it for so long I stopped trying to get help. A really bad/long episode this summer opened up the casebook again!
However, whether it be because of the nose breathing change, or just due to my body changing as I grow older, I started wheezing. Why all of a sudden at age 45? And why did the air hunger begin at 31? My doctor sent me to another ENT who decided to test me for allergies. Bingo. I tested positive for 47 of 54 things (the ones that were negative were the fooRAB
). I had "severe" reactions to all grasses and trees (I live in south Florida - where grass and trees don't do dormant!).
My ENT believes that years of air hunger were caused by these allergies. I will be starting the shot treatment this week, and I have some prescription drugs to help. I am angry yet elated about the discovery. I am happy that I know now what has been going on; I am mad that it took so long.
If anyone here is reading this because they are experiencing this air hunger feeling, get tested for allergies.
