I have a 94 ford thunderbird and about 2 weeks ago when I went to turn on the car the air conditioning went on and now it won't turn off. My husband and I never used it before this just happened by itself. Does anyone know why this could be happening and what I can do to make it stop because its wasting my gas very badly. And we all know how high the gas prices are getting. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Check to see if the control knob is in the defrost position. If it is, when you turn on the fan switch the A/C will be running automatically. Turn control to a dash or floor setting and it will stop.

Check and see if the heater control knob is set to defrost... People don't realize that on most newer cars, the air conditioning comes on in the defrost mode, to dehumidify the interior of the car.

The clutch in the compressor is probably stuck in the engaged position, I am not entirely sure how to get it out. A mechanic could probably fix it cheaply.
