annual smog checks like cars? And if we see any plane in the sky producing pollution that covers the sky, they should be reported by the people and grounded by the FAA? Cars caught producing visible pollution would not be able to get away with it, so why can planes?
Actually normals contrails (the little tail behind planes) are produced at elevations of 20,000 ft and higher and at -40 degrees--that short little tail that can be seen from the ground is >>frozen ice<< and it's short because the frozen vapor melts quickly.
"Exhaust vapour trails or contrails usually occur above 8000 metres (26,000 feet). where the temperature is below -40°C (-40°F)"
Wikipedia (above)
And since we've seen not short tails, but long and persistant trails that are thick and never melt, but just spead out and get blow around the whole sky even at much closer and lower elevation in very hot conditions, we know that these are pollution trails, not contrails (frozen water vapor).

"1. At which of the following temperatures does water spontaneously freeze?
a. 18°F b. 32°F c. 0°F d. -40°F
Answer: d. Ice always melts at 32°F, but water does not always freeze at 32°F. It must freeze onto something. However, at -40°F, water freezes spontaneously. If you poured a cup of water out of a window with the air temperature outside at -40°F, the water would freeze before it struck the ground."
Carole: Acutally their producing more pollution. I remember the 90s clearly and the sky was much clearer and cleaner and planes only produced short tails, never trails that cover the whole sky for hours.
This pollution: I've never seen the sky like this ever as a kid--not even one trail like this from a single plane.

This is a normal contrail tail behind a plane that I USED to only see:

Skies that look like this is getting rare here: http://unseenhands.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/2-contrail-is-not-chemtrail.jpg
Helen Killer: Airplane don't "seed clouds" unless something is placed into the exhaust--like silver iodide during the Vietnam war. Like Wikipedia mentions, you have to "disperse substances." That means there's something dipersed by planes today--which may not even be commercial planes.

Teekno: Contrails are not clouds, they're frozen water vapor. Clouds are actually formed, not just by rising heat, but by particles in the air. Planes emitting particles of substances can also produce what looks like clouds. Polymer powder is used to dry up moisture and break up clouds. It has been used to stop rain at events but can also be used to cause droughts by constantly absorbing the forming precipitation in the sky or by breaking up the rain clouds whenever they start to form.
