Agendus and Datebk5 Incompatibility

Well I'm certain to stir the proverbial pot with this one.

Agendus and Datebook on the same device will cause certain incompatibilities. It has to deal with the assignment of icons. Datebk5 visibly codes an icon for assignment with a @ sign. This will cause incompatibilities within Agendus. This @ sign shows up in the note field for the item either in Outlook or the PalmDesktop.

This incompatibility started when Agendus allowed usage of multiple icon sets. As you Datebk5 user's know - it doesn't. You can only have one icon set. Through the usage of Icon Manager you can move icons in and out of the set on either platform

Datebook seems to be unaffected by this other than icon's changing assignement. Agendus will crash if there are these @ set into the note field as outlined. The crash will be very inconsistend depending upon where the @ has migrated into the note whether it's in a meeting or todo note.

So be advised........This Moose has spent a lot of time dealing with this issue and the Iambic team.

Ran dbScan and found "corrupt records" and erased them, only to thereafter get a message saying "null handle . . . blah blah . . . this is not uncommon in 3rd party applications."

What they didn't tell me was what YOU JUST DID . . . it's the assignation of the "@" symbol and inability to work with multiple icon databases.

For safety, I keep a "TransferIcon" set ON THE CARD in a folder below launcher for safekeeping, as well as in the "IconManager" folder on the card. I have only THE ONE Agendus "Icons-Iambic" on the handheld because versions earlier than Agendus 7.06 used to CRASH if you even hit the "icon sets" button in the "edit icons" menu/section. My "TransferIconDB" is a compilation of all the "cool" icons I have sampled and/or made up myself.

Thanks for the heads up; I remember you remarking you'd used both to see the benefits of each application; I guess you've got to watch it if you want ot continue that. In any event, using both WILL corrupt something somehow and I deleted the trial of Datebk5. I may have bashed Agendus, and may continue to, but I've faced the fact that it is the very best available.

By the way - if any of you "look at" sample icon sets, here's a tip: GET ICON MANAGER (now freeware), run the program so it creates the "Icon Manager" Folder on your SD Card under "Programs," and then thereafter LOAD ANY NEW ICON SETS you want to "preview" through a CARD READER directly in to that folder! Don't hotsync them because the names you see when you download often "arrive" on the handheld as "Icons-Iambic and OVERWRITE your current icon set.

Open IconManager, and RENAME the icon sets now on your card to "BobSample1, BobSample2, etc. In that way if you copy, paste, use, switch or otherwise implement them on or to the handheld, you won't overwrite the Icons'Iambic database of your PRESENT icons. Viewing the sets in Icon Manager REQUIRES that they be COPIED to the handheld. If you don't rename them, you'll get a message saying "Do you wish to overwrite" or "Sorry - set with that name already exists." It's a GREAT safety measure implemented by IconManager to prevent overwritten icons sets. Remember that if you DO hotsync and overwrite by mistake, the "old familiar set" DOES NOT go to your archive folder - it just gets overwritten in the backup folder and you're screwed if you haven't made another copy!!

Icons can be added easily enough to your Icons-Iambic set, but be aware that IconManager somehow creates a "ghost" icon and the totals of icons will not be the same in Icon Manager versus when you phuysically count them under the Agendus Icon Edit window. There's one more sneaks in there somewhere. Agendus does allow you to tap and hold an icon to DRAG it to a better position without disrupting current icon assignation; however those "moves" will not be reflected in Icon Manager.

PTL,

A couple of additional points to your thorough post:

Icon Manager can also easily convert Hi Res Icons to Low Res with it's new version. This is great in my case because I was having some issues with icons created on the T3 that weren't really right on the Treo. Icon Manager fixed it.

I will dispute one point though - I agree that Agendus would not allow you to reposition (drag and drop) icons without losing or scrambling the set. This appears to be fixed now as you've noted.

I have successfully dragged and moved icons but I must do this within the Agendus program. If I try to move them in Icon Manager while viewing the working Icon set - it loses the numbering and then scrambles them. Also, I.M. has the ability to renumber the set globally - I don't recommend using this feature either unless you haven't already used a icon in that set. Once you've used an icon from that set then your goofed.

What I typically do is use the default set and then use Icon Manager to add to it or modify the look of a particular icon without changing it's position in the set. This seems to be your method as well.

Paul, one other thing but I don't think it will be an issue on the T3 as it is on the Treo. I am still getting resets when using midi alarms rather than the default alarms. This I believe is more a function of the Treo then any other Palm OS platform so it's a known issue ty the developers.

This @ and the midi alarm issue - they are the only things that have caused errant resets and I've initiated them with full knowledge and working behind the scenes with Iambic.

I think 8.04 is very stable and yet long overdue for this stability. It's been well over two months since 8.0 was released, but it appears in the past now.

Why would anyone in their right mind (a relative term with Palm enthusiasts) want DBk5 and Agendus on the same pda? It seems like a pure waste of space to me.

I know this question has been throught almost every forum on the web, but which one do you like more DBk5 or Agendus (especially the new one)?

I use the new one (I actually think I stupidly bought it twice duh), and I don't even know half of the capabilities.

Anywho. Thats all from me.

-CH

ps. Moose how are you liking the Treo? I just feel that I have no need for the Treo if I have a TT3. How may PDAs do you have (need) you know?

Yes, why would anyone want both. Well only for trial purposes to see which is the "keeper". I posted this same topic here in the iQue forum and in there I gave 10 reasons why I don't have Datebk5 and prefer Agendus. That's a brief explanation and won't bore you with more reasons.

The Treo is good and very useful. I wished initially that it had a 320 X 480 screen similar to the T3 and graffiti. The onboard keyboard has grown on me though and coupled with TextPlus I'm definitely faster at inputting then before. And it's truly one handed operation for just about everything, even inputting. I will upgrade to the next generation of Treo seen here provided it is 320 X 320 HiRes screen. I can handle the smaller foot print of the screen but I would truly like a VGA quality rather than EGA quality.

Ok here is a listing of current PDA's owned - truthfully only two are "needed".

Palm V
Palm Vx
Palm M515
Sony Clie T615C
Garmin iQue 3600 -this one is still used.
T3 - is loaned out and will probably be sold after it's return soon.
Treo 600 day to day hour to hour minute to minute use!

The V and Vx are gathering dust. The M515 and T615C are both used for testing when I'm asked to play with software by "old" friends at PalmOne and other software companies. A throw back to my old beta testing days with Palm, 3com. The V,Vx and M515 were purchased at 50% off suggested retail as part of the old Palm beta test benefit. This program was dropped when Palm stopped Public Beta Testing around the time they started liscensing to Handspring et.al.

The 615 was an outright purchase with the intent of using it's MP3 capabilites which is really the Sony ATRAC system.....I still have enough Memory Sticks with music to use it as such but it's not enough of a benefit to maintain.

The T3 well if it weren't for the Treo and it's converged platform I would not have opted and I'm somewhat beta testing it with my company because of our contract with Sprint. I miss BT and hence another reason to get the Next Gen - if it has it.

Ask anything else - you know me, I can fill up a post. :)

BTW - the thread in the Que forum - Reinbeau is a moderator and we have had friendly "battles" over the features and benefits of DB5 vs. Agendus. It's all in good fun so the references to "moderators and deletion" are the usual banter. She's been a moderator for about a month after having so many posts in the que forum and apparently none of the other mods had any knowledge of the Que they asked her since she is the "mom" of the forum.

GPS is the most prominent feature of course and it includes a Voice Guidance. Integrated GPS within the Palm address book so that you don't have to look stuff up twice.

Next, 320 X 480 resolution with collapseable VG. And I might add they had it before Palm. Won't do landscape unless the "additional" software has specifically been written for it.

It has several similar features of the T3 and it uses the Palm Universal Connnector that works with most accessories. The biggest negative is no SDIO. It's got simple SD function only so it can't use any BT or WiFi cards.

I wouldn't recommend it as a PDA unless someone really wanted to have the GPS functionality.

The Datebk5/Agendus thing is easy . . . YOU HAVE TO HAVE BOTH.

That way you can have an icon to remind you to play with the remaining icons so your new icon will be better. Iconic, isn't it?

Please don't promise to tie my hands behind my back in that heavy vest again . . . I promise I'll be good . . . make them stop . . . .

Agendus wins. Almost sorry to say it since not only CyclingHermes is getting "ripped" for double payments around here by Iambic . . . it's pretty much a racket with this $9.95 every month thing . . . but Agendus wins. Period and hands down.

I would agree with Point 2 of Moose's list along with (for my purposes) hiliting of to-dos and meetings by HILITE COLOR or text color, the better list view (very clear, although the old "blue day headers" were best) and the wallpaper thing.

I don't use "wallpaper" pictures persay; I use PLAIN "light yellow" wallpaper for the month view only, so it's a yellow cast, then hilite individual days (ESSENTIAL!) and add icons - you can pretty much plan EVERYTHING in month view alone, it's so detailed.

You haven't been taking your meds again, have you? :D

The wallpaper thingy, I agree it's not that big of a deal but it is a feature that is not available in Datebk5.

But let me be clear - Datebk5 is a great calendar program. It is not, however, in the same category of application that Agendus is because of it's tightly integrated Contact History and seperate Contact view and sorting capabilities.

Hell, I could probably write the code that Datebk5 uses to link to todo's and contacts.......isn't it just a shortcut /L to link to the contacts?

Ok, this Republican Soap Box standing goofy Moose is going to go watch the suspense and drama of the Democrats trying to nominate John Kerry without getting Ketchup all over the place.
