I am currently a senior in college, graduating in May. I plan on contacting a navy recruiter next week, what I am wondering is, about how long will it be until I am actually "in the navy?" I notice that some people currently in DEP don't enter boot camp until November this year or later - is this a normal wait time? I'd like to begin as soon as I can after graduation

YOU can decide. They will push for the soonest possible ship date. Be stern and say I want to leave by xx/xx/xx and/or I do not want to leave before xx/xx/xx. They can say all the things in the world, "you have to go now," for example, but you are ultimately going to decide when YOU go. So, don't feel like you have to do whatever they say when it comes to choices like this. You will have to set on a date before you go to MEPS or at MEPS, I can't remember which.

I had a date of Nov. something and my recruiter pushed me to go sooner in Oct. and I went. I later found out, I did have the choice to remain with my original date, contrary to what my recruiter had me believe.

Also, do not let your college education go to waist, the above poster is completely correct, you should go in as an Officer, not Enlisted.

Its up to you. Right now, a lot of people are in the DEP program and the soonest they can leave is at the end of the year. But it depends on the job you pick. I picked a job in intelligence back in December and, since the job is in demand right now, they wanted me to leave January!! That was a bit too soon for me so then I asked if I could leave in April, which was completely okay.

After you take the ASVAB and go to MEPS to pick your job, you should definitely talk to the career counselor about which jobs are currently in demand and which ones have a long waiting list.

Hey bud let me ask you this. Are you planning on going Enlisted. I would highly recommend talking to an Officer Recruiter if your graduating from college.

DEP is a program that allows someone to join but not ship to bootcamp until a school seat is open for them. Meaning if you join as an electrician the Navy will know the day you join when a seat will be available in that electrician school. They will then give you options on when you can ship to bootcamp. After bootcamp its on to school. You can only be in DEP for 365 days. If your looking to leave right away its going to be hard as retention these days are high and enlistments are up with the unemployment rate the way it is
