I bought a "Wellson" after-market car charger for $2.99 (Yeah !) and a charger-head for W800 for another $2.99 (!) at a local dollar store here in Toronto.

A total of $5.98 spent on a car-charger is not too bad as I was betting on whether the W800 charger head is usable for my W810i.

Tried it for the very first time this afternoon inside my car and got an error message on my phone screen "Charing Error - Stop Charging"

Questions:

1. Does it mean the W800 charger head is not suitable for W810i?

2. Do the SE phones accept only charger manufactured by SE?

3. If this Wellson charger is not good for my W810i, here in Toronto where can I buy a reasonably priced but functioning after-market charger?

I look forward to hearing from anyone of you. Thank you.

No, it's actually hit or miss when dealing with a car charger, whether it be aftermarket or OEM. Sometimes they'll work for a long time, some are just plain defective. However, it does seem like a slight problem because I also had it with both of my W810i's as well. Just try reinserting the charging port until it successfully starts to charge. Otherwise, check out Pacific Mall. I'm sure most of the vendors there can help you out.

Thank you peryus88 for your prompt reply. Always appreciate that.

Wow! I believe (judging from your service provider cingular) that you are from the US. Even you know the P-Mall! Our famous "landmark" here in Toronto!!

You also said that "Sometimes they'll work for a long time, some are just plain defective". What I am concerned is that using that Wellson charger may damage my phone.

LOL. It helps because I live just north of Seattle. It only takes me a few hours to drive up to Canada, which I have been there a bunch of times...love downtown Vancouver, especially the Robson St area. Plus, it's the closest Goldilocks that I know of.

PMall is one of the places that you folks up there have the luxury of going to for electronics, especially cell phones and accessories, because GSM phones have a bigger presence there as opposed to living in the US. I can't fly/drive to places like NY and such a whole lot to check out new devices. So I have to rely on online shopping or connections.

I usually go with OEM products...it's always a safer bet. Because like you pointed out, there might be ones that can damage your phone.

Thank you again peryus88 for your reply.

I have another solution which I bought from the Canadian Tire today: That is an "in-car power inverter".

Click this to look at the detailed description of this product:
Canadian Tire

Plug it into the cigarette lighter socket and I can use the charger that comes with my cell phone. No need to buy something which I really am not sure whether it is usable or not.

In addition, with the inverter, I do not need to worry about buying another car charger when I change phones some time down the road.

However, the product is still inside the wrapping. I will use it when the battery is running real low.
