After I upgraded the RAM in my iMac 10.4 OS it will not boot up?

My iMac has 512 MB right now. I put another 512 stick in and when I try to boot the screen stays black and the power light just flashes. I can use either memory stick in either slot but not both at the same time. Any advice would be great.
 
did you use mac compatiple ram?
if so was it the right type for the imac?
if so are you sure you didnt put it in wrong?
