After having sex how long does it take for the sperm to fertilize the egg?

i think the advice nurse was on crack when she told me i had to wait until my missed period to take a blood test. usually after implantation, 7-12 days after ovulation you can get a + blood test.
 
It takes sperm about 2 hours to swim to where your egg is. If there is no egg then they will hang out for about 72 hours before they die off.

Once the egg and sperm meet then it takes another 4 - 10 days for your egg to get to your uterus an implant into you uterine wall. Once this happens your body starts to produce HcG hormones. These hormones are what the test read to see a positive and they double every 48 - 72 hours.

You can take one of two blood test:

1. Qualitative - they draw blood and put 3 drops on a HPT and wait 3 mins for the lines. This test can be accurate 2.5 - 3 weeks from your LMP.

2. Quantitative - they draw blood and spin it in a machine for 1 hour. It reads the exact amount of HcG in your body, most hospitals will classify you as pregnant if that number is over 10. You have to wait 2 - 2.5 weeks from you LMP for an accurate result.

Or just wait until you miss your period.
 
so the question isn't really about how long it takes to fertilize but how long it takes to detect the pregnancy hormones. I think it takes about 2 weeks on average.
