As Chicago settles in for another warm week, the National Weather Service is warning of the possibility of severe thunderstorms in the area today.
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for extreme northwestern Lake, Cook, Dupage, northwestern Will, northeastern Kendall And southeastern Kane Counties until 1:30 p.m. The storm is capable of producing 100 mph winds, according to the Weather Service.
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued this afternoon for Cook, DuPage, Will, Kankakee and Iroquois counties until 7 p.m.
The line of storms already has produced wind gusts of 90 mph in Winfield in DuPage County about 12:25 p.m., knocking down trees and damage roofs, 59 mph in West Chicago and 52 mph in Batavia, as well as quarter-inch hail in Will County. For details, check the Chicago Weather Center blog.
The high today is expected to be in the low 90s, with a heat index of 95 to 100 degrees. There's a 40 percent chance of rain in the area.
Tonight, temperatures should go down to the 70s, and there's a 30 percent chance of rain forecast. Highs are expected to remain in the 90s through the rest of the week at least.[email protected]
