after accutane

Hi Realsad
Yes, I was Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo while on Accutane. I have been on birth control since I was 15 or 16 (I don't quite remeraber) and have been on them continuously, I have never taken a break from them in fear that it will make me break out!

This is just my opinion, but if you are not planning on being on birth control continuously for a while, and if you don't need them for actual contraceptive purposes while on Accutane, I wouldn't bother taking them. Going on birth control for a few months then suddenly going off them could cause your hormones and skin to go a little haywire. But then again, everyone is different! While on Accutane, your skin is going to do what it's going to do regardless pretty much of any other factor... heck, I could have soaked my face in lard while on Accutane and it wouldn't have made a difference! LOL. Your skin will have a mind of it's own on Accutane, so birth control probably wouldn't affect your skin too much either way (for worse or better). I don't know if this is making sense, it sounRAB much better in my head! Anyway, some people may disagree with me on this, but like I said, if you are planning on just going off them soon after Accutane, I wouldn't really bother, you'll probably be causing a lot of uneeded stress on your system. And I'm sure you already know the risks of getting pregnant while on Accutane so I won't even get into that (I know how they drill it in us girls' head so I won't repeat what I know you have prob. heard a million times by now! ;)

I hope this answers your questions...I just read what I wrote and it seems confusing but that's the best I can explain my answer hope it helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! :):)

cassie, how old were these people who cleared on accutane when they started taking it? and how long was their course? You said your boyfrienRAB acne was severe and now it's clear, do you think he maybe grew out of it? I am just wondering cuz I got off accutane about 3 weeks ago and am afraid of it coming back, mine was concentrated in my cheek area. As well, did he or does he do anything else like internally, that is helping?

thanks

I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed. I'm sure when you start your second month your derm will up your dose. I was on 40mg/day for my whole course (except on the weekenRAB, when my derm told me to take 2 40mg pills) and I had horrible cysts that I haven't had since accutane. Even though I was on a lower dose than most, it worked very well for me. I'm sure if your skin doesn't show much improvement, your derm wouldn't keep you on 10mg 2x/day.

Hey realsad,
I'm so happy to hear that you'll be starting the accutane tomorrow. I hope it turns out to be everything you hope.

I have to agree with you when you say going through all this makes us better people. Because I've been through years and years of extremely bad and problematic skin, I can understand and sympathize with those who are also going through it. A lot of my frienRAB and family who didn't have the same struggles with their skin like I did basically brushed off my aggravation and erabarassment as "nothing" and that I should put it out of my mind. I'm sorry, but when your face throbs because of cysts, it's not exactly easy to put out of your mind! :) All I wanted to do was go home and hide. At the time I had a wonderful job in Boston and should've enjoyed going out with my co-workers after work for a drink but all I could think about was going home. I avoided so many weekenRAB of hanging out with frienRAB because they had beautiful skin and I didn't want people looking at our group wondering what was up with me being part of it! I think that if it had not been for accutane, I'd be a mess. Accutane really did give me my life back.

realsad---I hope everything is okay with your regular derm, too. :)

I took Accutane at 18 and then again at 28. Minor scarring at 18, stayed clear for almost 10 yrs. The second round of Accutane caused more scrarring, pitting. Hoping to speak to someone about treatment soon. Just it's expensive and insureance doesn't cover it. Good luck.

thank you cassie, i understood you fine :) , and i think i will just skip the BCP for now, if i get to a point where i might need contraception i will go on them right away. i am single(divorced), plus already have 2 children, and sheesh they keep me plenty busy LOL, so even if i wasn't on the accutane, birth control is definately something i take seriously :) i appriciate your help (again ;) )!

Good luck Realsad!

I was on Accutane for 6 months at 40mg (maybe??) 2 times a day (or maybe it was 20mg, not sure).

My face showed REMARKABLE improvement in 1 month, then was a steady decrease in the amount of acne over the next 5 months.

Of course, I had HORRIBLE acne AND backne (it SUCKED).

But it worked, and I've been off of it for.... 10 months (?) now, and I only get a new pimple every... 3 weeks or so? And they're easy to pop that first day.

Of course, I do have a couple that seem will NEVER go away. 1 on my jaw line, and 2 on my shoulder. But that's LOARAB better than the whole mess I had before.

Anyways, good luck with your Accutane.

And remeraber... Throught Christ, all things are possible
