African refugee camp question:?

Rockabilly

Why don't women and girls organize and all go out in groups to collect firewood and water so that they won't as likely be victimized? Also, why don't they fashion weapons-sharp sticks, rocks in a scarf or bag to weild, whatever. It's just strange that this little bit of survivalism hasn't developed in that particular community. This is a serious question. Anybody out there involved in the camps who can answer?
Thanks-
P.S. I am aware of the women distributing solar water heaters, but I'm asking for the women and girls who don't have this "luxury", and of course they stll have to schlep the water to heat. ???
What an interesting response!!!
Thank God for Sandcastle. The guys who responded seem to think the women should just get raped and not try to fight back or figure out strategic responses. Unfortunately, as a professonal life coach, I happen to know that this is how women are raised...to be helpless. I already knew the answer to this question. How many men from ANY culture would think in terms of, "Oh, I'd rather just get raped than take a chance on fighting back"? I already know the answer to that question also. Women in todays world are TAUGHT to function as islands rather than to organize. As a student of Anthropology, I know that this was not always the case.
Rastaguy you sound like an angry perpetrator yourself.
Paul F. You aren't much of a student of history if you are not aware of how many "grassroots/guerrilla" defenses have overthrown powerful enemies with ingenuity and courage. Heck, just look up how the women of Liberia brought Charles Taylor down--with no weapons.

How effective do you think your primitive defense weapons would be against men with guns?

WWEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
the reason survivalism hasn't kicked in is because getting raped beats a bullet to the head any day!!!!!!!!! men are alot stronger than women, thats a fact, and many parts of africa are third world... sooooooooo rape is an all day thing... bullet beats sharp sticks, bag of rocks, etcetera, and getting gunned down/cleaved by one man as a group is not much different from gettin gunned down as one person....

its not AMERICA, its AFRICA... america and africa are parallel universes, america is heaven, africa is hell....

men in african carry meat cleavers, could care less about life, chop down people for no reason in raids, govt. soldiers trying to stop this are also raping and murdering people.........

how do u not like... know this at... like.... all?!

It is my understanding that they wait until they are out of supplies and then they go. So they aren't planning ahead, and they aren't working together, and they are probably getting pretty hungry/thirsty by then.

I have often thought that if they would go as groups, if men would disguise themselves as women, if they would plan an ambush etc that they could stop a lot of this stuff. Or, if the groups who are sending in food would send them stuff that doesn't need to be cooked, then they wouldn't have to go get firewood.

Sudan is calling for all foreign aid workers to leave the area by the end of the year. If something doesn't change soon, all of the people will be wiped out.

I have worked with IDP and Refugee Camp issues for many years and the answer is simple. The more women that go, the more that either are raped or killed. The women who venture out of the camps do so in order to survive and the men they encounter are not simply village men, they are soldiers of rebel militias with powerful weapons. These weapons can be A-K47's or machetes, and they can certainly kill the women if they fight back. This is why many women choose to go with no small self-defense objects, such as stones or sharp sticks because if they do use these weapons the rebel soldier will most likely kill them. If they are raped, at least they are alive.

Even if women went in groups, the rebels would still be stronger and the women would still be raped or killed.

I am glad you asked this question to further understand the unfortunate and desperate issue at hand.
