Life magazine was almost completely photographic based. And since them many of modern magazines followed in their foot steps. Without photographs many of stories like Yankee Papa 13 just could NOT be told;

Even today some articles are purely TEXT based. And for those pictures don't matter at all. Some are almost completely pictures with SUPPORTING text. The story of Yankee Papa 13 was one of them.
Others are in the middle ground.
