Hi,
I hope some one out there can help me by giving me some advice.
I was involved in a car accident 2 weeks ago, got hit from behind while stationary. The second row of seats in my jeep were down, it's a 7 seater, and as they are on runners, the seat behind me flew forward and the headrest hit my back.I suffered whiplash and immediate discomfort in the bottom of my back.

I went to A&E about 1 hour later as my back felt very uncomfortable and it hurt when I sat down more.
A doctor asked me to stand with my back to him, I was already standing as sitting was too uncomfortable. He gently ran his fingers down my spine and then declared that I must of sprained my coccyx. Told me to take some painkillers and see my doctor if the pain did not go away.

1 week later I was not sleeping because of the pain in my lower back, sitting for any length of time causes more pain in my lower back. So I spoke to my GP on the telephone.
She said she had the report from A&E and suggested that the doctor had said I did not appear to be in much pain! HUH! that's a laugh what sort of doctor is he?? She suggested that I must have got a whiplash and prescribed me more painkillers.

It is now 3 weeks later, nothing has changed. My insurers are now sending me to physio but surely I should have had an xray. The diagnosis has only surely been made on assumptions.
I already have cervical spondilitis so I assume this has now been agrivated.

I never had any back pain before the accident.

Can any one advise me as to what they think or would have expected.

Thank you

It is sometimes possible to do a diagnosis without an x-ray, but you definitely want at least a detailed physical exam before starting on PT.

Call your doctor again. Be very specific about the location and severity of the pain, how it has interfered with your life, what aggravates it and to what extent the medicine relieves it.

Thank you.
My GP reckons stronger pain killers are the answer. I an not impressed. I have my first physio session today but i will talk to the thearapist first as I was in agony last night, pain in my back which seem to spread in to my right hip and down my right leg to just above my knee. Could not lay on my back, tried sleeping on my side, nothing worked. I spent half the night up drinking tea in tears.

I hope they can advise me today or even refer me back to the hospital.
It is almost 3 weeks I think since the accident. it was on the 18th Noveraber so I would have expected it to ease off a bit by now.

I don't blame you for not being impressed with your doc. What he recommended is normal only after x-rays are taken and nothing is found. I would suggest either going to an ortho or neuro or getting a referral to one if the physio does not help. Pain going down the leg is a pinched nerve and sometimes, a strained muscle can cause this, sometimes a disc. I hope your treatments help you.
