I have been borrowing my Mums Ford Ka for a few months and sods law there is a problem that has become apparent one week before she is due to have back and sell it. The steering is making a loud wurring sound when the steering wheel is turned. I want to sort out the problem before returning it as I guess no one would want to buy it with the very noticable sound. Is there anything I could try to rectify the problem as cannot really afford to take to a garage? Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? A friend mentioned steering fluid may need topping up but my partner assures me this was done recently. I would appreciate any ideas even if it is just a quick and safe fix so my mother is happy and she can trade in or sell car. Thank you for any ideas. The car is a Ford Ka 1.3 NOW 51 Plate

Thanks

It may not be a steering problem. it may be a joint probelm at the wheel end, remember car noises are not always what they seem, it could also be a wheel bearing that is more noticable when steering, the easiest way and cheapest way to find out the problem is to take the car in for an MOT whether it needs it or not and you will soon be told where the problem is, for the sake of about £25 it is well worth it.

From what you are describing. It sounds like the the power steering belt is slipping when you have car on full lock. This is a common problem and is easy to rectify. You need to tighten the power steering belt. If the belt is on its limit, you will need to replace the belt. Its not that expensive to get a garage to do, if you can't do it yourself.
