Advice on Backpacking?

Hey people, I have been thinking of going backpacking for a very long time now, but dont know where to start and how I go about preparing. I want to start in a place like vietnam (where my family is from), and work my way all the way back to uk using land transport. Is this realistic? How much money would I need? Should I go alone? I have so many questions to ask, but no one to awnser them, so I was wondering if you guys could help.

Please any info or useful advice would be greatly appreciated and also online resources that you could point me too.
