advice on a vegetable garden?

Start small. An inexperienced gardener putting in a huge garden is a recipe for being overwhelmed, and giving up entirely in frustration.

Plant what you like. Are fresh, real tomatoes the best? Do you hate the pink crunchy things they pass off as tomatoes at the grocery? Plant 2 or 3 tomato plants.

Maybe a couple peppers.

Do you cook? Try a few herbs - thyme, oregano, both easy, and perennial (will come back year after year of their own accord).

Add more plants as you gain experience an confidence.

Most important part is working from the ground up .
In other words put lots of effort into getting the soil healthy and full of nourishment .
Most people don't understand the importance of this when they first begin. Plants don't just jump out of the dirt , they have very precise needs to flourish . Talk to some local gardeners and read a book to get started . What to grow depends on the area you are in and the type of soil etc. there is much to learn , it is something like raising kids , enjoy the journey .
