Not sure if this should go in camping or climbing, but whatever.
Me and 2 other friends are planning to do an AT thru-hike next year. We're all Philmont and Mountain to Sea trail veterans, but none of us have ever done this. So I have several questions.
Is the mail-dropping thing essential or just something people do, we were considering that it might be more enjoyable to be slightly less planful than that just to add to the enjoyment, would this be some kind of horrible mistake or can we do well without out the mail-drops?
I already have; a good-quality backpack, a backpacking tent, rain gear, hiking clothes, and boots. Things I don't have are a working water pump and a stove (I usually hike with Scouts so I've never needed to own these personally) With those things and food, how much will the trip generally cost us?
Is it more fun to do a North-South route or South-North?
Some guys I know attempted a thru-hike last year but were stopped short near Roanoke when winter hit early. They told us about it though and how they're going to try again in April, and we found it pretty inspiring.
Thanks for any help you guys give.
