Advice about stocking my 2 fish tanks?

I need some advice on what is the best stocking for my 2 tanks. I have 2: 12g tanks. I need to do some re-arranging with my current fish. In one of my 12g tanks I currently have:

4 harlequin rasboras
4 platies (2 male and 2 female)
**the thing is with this tank is that I had gotten 2 females for my male but one of the females is now male. I got another female but yet the males are still getting grumpy with each other. Not really aggressive but the dominant male will flair his fins and the other male (the one that turned) will clamp his fins down and lay on his side like he's playing dead until the dom. male swims away.

So, should I leave my current tank stocked as is minus one of the males and put that male in the other tank? In the other tank I am putting 5 male cherry barbs. That is the reason I got the other tank cuz the barbs are in a 5g that is too small for them.

Which is better:
5 male cherry barbs & 1 male platy w/ 2 females (have to buy them)
or
5 male cherry barbs & 4 harlequin rasboras
**and then make the other 12g tank all platies. Keep the 2 males and 2 females and add another female or 2.

If I do keep the males together and get more females will the males leave each other alone? My big concern with putting platies in with the cherry barbs is that the platies will eat all the food since my cherry barbs aren't very aggressive eaters and the platies tend to be piggies when it comes to food.
Sorry if this is long and confusing but I just want to put the best arrangement of fish in the tanks. I am vigilante with my tank maintenance but I am not sure which fish match up best. Thanks for the advice.
